WHAT IS BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling. Evolving from it's Japanese jujutsu roots in the early 1920s in Brazil, BJJ involves the stand-up aspects of its origin but is most famous for its devasting ground-fighting techniques. Individuals focus on technique and leverage, in order to gain superior positioning where the practioner can then apply various holds, locks and joint manipulations in order to subdue their adversary. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in commonly referred to as "the gentle art."


I HAVE NO MARTIAL ARTS EXPERIENCE, CAN I STILL TRAIN?

Absolutely! We're all here to learn, regardless of our own experience level.


IT’S MY FIRST CLASS, WHAT DO I DO?

Prior to class, read the Etiquette page on our website. Arrive 10-15 minutes prior to class time so you can go through the sign up process, as well as meet the instructor.
Bring: your gi if you have one (we have loaners), athletic clothing, and some water. Each class is approximately an hour in length, beginning with a warmup.


WHAT AGE DO YOU START AT WITH KIDS?

We generally accept students starting around age 5. Our junior classes are split into groups (determined by age, size and experience level).


WHAT ARE THE UNIFORM REQUIREMENTS?

We ask that you wear a clean gi of matching colour. White, Black and Blue are all acceptable colours. We also ask that you wear a rashguard under the gi. Underwear is mandatory.


HOW DOES THE BELT SYSTEM WORK?

Everyone begins at white belt. Adults progress through blue, purple, brown and eventually black. Kids progress through white, grey, yellow, orange and green before being elligble for their blue belt at 16. Time spent between each belt is directly related to one's commitment to the sport as well as improving oneself. Typically, 2 years at each belt.
